Ceramic coating, sealant or wax: what actually makes sense in Kolkata
Car Care & Paint
·3 min read·Updated 11 Sept 2026
Paint protection is the most oversold category in Indian car care. Ceramic coating in particular is marketed with language borrowed from armour, and the gap between the claim and the product is wide enough to be worth explaining plainly — including the cases where we would tell you not to bother.
Key takeaways
All three are sacrificial layers above the clear coat. None of them makes paint hard.
Ceramic coating resists chemical etching and makes washing easier; it does not prevent scratches.
Kolkata humidity and pollution shorten the practical life of every protective layer.
A coating over swirled paint locks the swirls in — correction has to come first.
For an older car, or one about to be sold, wax is usually the rational choice.
What all three actually are
Your car's paint is layers: metal, primer, colour, and above it a clear coat. The clear coat is what you see, what gloss comes from, and what gets damaged.
Wax, sealant and ceramic coating are all sacrificial layers placed above the clear coat. They exist to be attacked instead of it. None of them makes the clear coat harder, thicker or tougher.
Every honest conversation about paint protection starts here. If a layer is being described as making your paint hard, the description is wrong.

What Kolkata specifically does to a protective layer
Three local factors shorten the life of all of them.
Acidic deposits. Rain here carries a real pollutant load, and when it dries on a warm panel it concentrates. Bird droppings under mature tree cover in Ballygunge or Salt Lake are acidic and act fast. This is exactly what a coating is good at resisting, and it is the strongest argument for one in this city.
Humidity and heat. Sustained high humidity plus strong sun degrades organic layers quickly. Wax gives up soonest.
Abrasive dust. Construction dust in New Town, Rajarhat, Garia and the metro corridors is the coarse, angular kind. No protective layer stops it marking paint when dry-wiped, which is why washing technique matters more than any product you put on top. That argument is made fully in our paint safety article.
The order that matters
This is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.
A ceramic coating is optically clear. It does not hide anything. Applied over paint with years of bucket-wash swirls, every one of those swirls remains fully visible — and is now sealed beneath a layer that takes machine work to remove.
The correct sequence is: wash, decontaminate, correct the paint, then coat. The correction is the labour-intensive part, and it is where the cost of a legitimate coating job actually sits. When a quote is unusually low, that is the stage that has been skipped.
Who should get what
Your situation
Our honest recommendation
New car, good paint, keeping it years
Ceramic coating, done properly
Two to four years old, paint in decent shape
Correction, then coating or a good sealant
Older car, heavy swirls
Correction if you want the gloss back; then wax or sealant
Selling within a year
Polish and wax — a coating will not be recovered in the price
Parked under trees, washed regularly
Coating is genuinely useful here — acid resistance is the point
Low budget, want the best return
Consistent proper washing beats any product. Start there
The thing that matters more than any of it
We would rather say this than sell an upgrade: the largest single influence on how your paint looks in five years is not which protective layer you chose. It is whether the car was washed correctly for those five years.
A coated car washed with a reused bucket and a gritty cloth will end up swirled, under the coating. An uncoated car washed properly every time will look better. Get the washing right first; treat protection as the layer on top of a good routine, not a substitute for one.

Frequently asked
Questions on this topic
Is ceramic coating worth it in Kolkata?+
For a newer car in good paint condition, yes — it resists the acidic residue from rain and bird droppings that this climate delivers constantly, and it makes routine washing quicker and gentler. For an older car with heavily swirled paint, the money is better spent on correction first, or on wax.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?+
No, and this is the claim to be most sceptical about. A coating is a few microns thick and will resist very light marring, but it will not stop a key, a careless wash, or grit dragged across the panel. Anyone promising scratch-proof paint is selling something that does not exist.
How long does ceramic coating last in Kolkata?+
Less than the brochure figure. Claims of five to seven years assume garage parking and careful maintenance; in Kolkata’s humidity, pollution and sun, expect meaningfully less, and expect the water-beading effect to fade well before the coating is functionally gone. Two to three years of genuine benefit is a realistic expectation for a well-maintained car.
What is the difference between wax, sealant and ceramic coating?+
Wax is a natural or synthetic layer that sits on the paint and lasts weeks to a couple of months. A sealant is synthetic, bonds slightly better and lasts a few months. A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that cures into a semi-permanent layer and lasts years rather than months. Cost and durability rise in that order; none of them changes the paint itself.
Can ceramic coating be applied over swirled paint?+
It can, and it should not be. The coating is optically clear, so every existing swirl and scratch stays visible and is now sealed under a layer that is hard to remove. Paint correction must come first — which is a substantial part of why a proper coating job costs what it does.
Do I still need to wash a ceramic coated car?+
Yes, just as often. The coating makes dirt release more easily and makes each wash gentler and quicker, which is its real practical benefit. It does not keep the car clean. A coated car left unwashed for a month in Kolkata is still a dirty car.
Is a cheap ceramic coating worth taking?+
Usually not. The cost of a proper job is mostly labour — decontamination and paint correction before anything is applied. A low price almost always means that preparation was skipped, which means the coating is sealing in defects. Ask specifically what correction is included.
What should I choose for an older car?+
Wax or a sealant, applied regularly, along with a consistent washing routine. It gives most of the practical benefit for a fraction of the cost, and on a car you may sell within a couple of years the economics of a coating do not work.
