Every car wash price list in India is split by vehicle type: hatchback, sedan, SUV, sometimes premium SUV and luxury. Owners sometimes wonder why washing a bigger car should cost more when the process is the same. The answer is in the car itself — surface area, height, wheels, cabin size and materials all change how much work a proper wash and interior clean involve.
Why size changes the work
A proper wash is not a single action repeated faster on a bigger car. It is a fixed method applied panel by panel: spray, dwell, lift with a clean towel face, buff, turn the towel, move on. The number of panels, the height of the roof, the size of the wheels and the size of the cabin decide how many repetitions, how many towels and how much product a car needs. That is why washing a seven-seater MUV properly takes much longer than washing a compact hatchback, and why most services price by vehicle category.
Hatchbacks
The most common cars on Kolkata roads. Compact, with less paint and glass, a small boot and a smaller cabin. A careful exterior wash is quick and uses fewer towels. Where hatchbacks get dirty first:
- The rear hatch and window. The flat back of a hatchback creates a low-pressure zone at speed that pulls road dust and spray onto it. Many hatchbacks have a rear wiper for exactly this reason.
- Lower doors and sills, close to the road.
- A cabin that works hard. Hatchbacks are often the family's daily car — school runs, groceries, commuting — so the interior collects crumbs and dust quickly.
Sedans
More length, a separate boot and usually a little more cabin space. A sedan has more paint and a longer roof and bonnet than a hatchback, but the roof is still easy to reach. Where sedans get dirty first:
- The boot lid and rear bumper, from road spray.
- The long bonnet and roof, which collect droppings, sap and leaves when parked under trees.
- Chauffeur-driven sedans need the rear cabin kept especially clean — it is where passengers sit.
SUVs and MUVs
The fastest-growing segment in India. More of everything:
- Surface area. Taller sides, a bigger bonnet, a large roof, and often a large tailgate. Significantly more paint and glass than a hatchback.
- The roof. Above eye height on most SUVs. It collects leaves, droppings, sap and dust that owners never see — until the paint has etched. Cleaning it properly requires a safe step or platform; leaning on the car or standing on sills scratches paint and damages trim.
- Wheels. Larger wheels with more spokes and deeper barrels, and heavier cars that use their brakes harder, mean more brake dust. See alloy wheel cleaning.
- Wheel arches and lower body. SUVs are often taken off-road or through waterlogged streets, filling arches with mud. Black plastic cladding on many SUVs fades and needs its own care.
- Roof rails and side steps trap grime and need extra time.
- Interiors. Bigger cabins, and on MUVs and seven-seat SUVs, a third row and more carpet, more seats and more vents to clean.
Premium SUVs and luxury cars
Premium cars add complexity rather than just size:
- Paint. Many have deep, dark or metallic finishes that show swirls instantly. Some paints are relatively soft and mar easily.
- Trim. Gloss black, chrome and brushed metal scratch with any careless wipe.
- Glass. Large panoramic roofs, acoustic glass and coated windscreens.
- Interiors. Quality leather, Alcantara, open-pore wood, large screens and ambient lighting — each with its own cleaning needs.
- Sensors. Cameras, radar and parking sensors around the car that must be cleaned gently.

Comparing the work
Pickups, commercial vans and fleet vehicles
Commercial vehicles are a separate case again. Vans and pickups have large flat panels, utility interiors and often heavy loads of dust and grime from their work. They are usually washed on a schedule set by the business rather than by appearance, and their interiors need practical, frequent cleaning rather than detailing. See fleet and cab washing.
The interior: where the difference is biggest
On the outside, an SUV may take perhaps half as long again as a hatchback. Inside, the difference can be much larger. A seven-seat MUV has three rows of seats to vacuum, seat rails and folding mechanisms that trap crumbs, a long stretch of carpet, more vents — often including roof-mounted rear AC vents — and a boot that may be the family's luggage, pram and sports-kit space. Third-row seats are often used by children and are where most spills and crumbs end up. A full interior detail on a large MUV is a substantial job; on a hatchback, it is much quicker. See interior cleaning and interior deep cleaning.
Parking considerations by size
Larger cars are harder to fit into Kolkata's tight lanes and basement bays, which affects how they get dirty and damaged. SUVs in tight bays pick up door dings and scrapes on the sides and corners; their mirrors are more likely to be brushed by passing two-wheelers. Low hatchbacks in lanes get more road spray on their lower doors. Wherever the car parks, a wash that happens in place — rather than requiring the car to be manoeuvred out to a wash bay — avoids adding to that wear.
Colour matters as much as size
A black hatchback can need more careful washing than a white SUV. Dark paint shows swirl marks, water spots and dust within a day, and any careless wiping is immediately visible; white and silver hide dust but show traffic film and iron specks. If your car is dark, whatever its size, the gentleness of the method matters more than anything else. See swirl marks.
Whatever the size or colour, the method is the same: plenty of lubrication, clean towels, light strokes.
Bikes
Two-wheelers are a category of their own: little paint, but exposed electricals, a chain and brakes that need specific care. See bike washing and chain care.
Frequency by body type
Frequency depends more on where the car is parked and how it is driven than on its size. But a few patterns hold. SUVs parked outdoors benefit from the same or higher frequency as smaller cars, because their roofs collect debris unseen. Chauffeur-driven sedans usually need the highest frequency. Second cars of any size need less. See how often to wash your car.
Protection by body type
Ceramic coating is priced by size for the same reason washing is: more paint takes longer to correct and coat. On SUVs, coating the roof is particularly valuable, because it is the panel most exposed to sun and droppings and least often cleaned. On premium cars, correction before coating is especially important because swirls show so clearly. See ceramic coating.
