Park under a tree in Salt Lake, Alipore or Ballygunge and you will find two kinds of trouble on the car by evening: bird droppings and sticky spots of tree sap. Both are easy to remove on the day they land. Both can leave permanent marks in the clear coat if they are left in the sun or wiped off the wrong way. The difference between a five-minute job and a polishing bill is mostly timing and technique.

Key takeaways

  • Bird droppings are acidic and contain grit; in hot sun they can etch the clear coat within hours.
  • Never wipe a dropping dry — soften it first with plenty of liquid, then lift.
  • Tree sap bonds to paint as it hardens; soften it with a suitable remover rather than scraping.
  • Etch marks left behind need polishing; light ones can be improved, deep ones may be permanent.
  • A protective layer and regular washing make both far easier to remove and less likely to mark.

Why droppings and sap are different from ordinary dirt

Most dirt on a car is inert: dust and soot sit on the surface until they are washed off. Bird droppings and tree sap are active. They react with the paint or bond to it over time, so the longer they stay, the harder they are to remove and the more likely they are to leave a mark.

Bird droppings

Bird droppings are acidic and usually contain grit — seeds, sand, fragments of shell. On a hot panel the problem is accelerated. As the paint heats in the sun it expands slightly and softens; as it cools in the evening it contracts around the hardened deposit. Repeat that for a few days and the clear coat underneath takes on the dropping's outline as a dull, etched mark. On a dark car in a Kolkata summer, a dropping can mark the paint within hours.

Tree sap

Sap lands as small sticky drops, often too small to notice. In heat it hardens and bonds tightly to the clear coat. The bond itself is the problem: scraping hardened sap off with a fingernail or a dry cloth takes clear coat with it, and leaves scratches around the spot. Under the trees of Salt Lake blocks, the old roads of Alipore and Ballygunge Circular Road, a car can collect dozens of sap spots in a week.

How to remove a bird dropping safely

  1. Do not wipe it dry. The grit inside will scratch.
  2. Soak it. Fold a microfibre, soak it in waterless wash solution or plain water, and lay it over the dropping for one to two minutes. This rehydrates and softens the deposit.
  3. Lift, do not rub. Pinch and lift the softened bulk with the cloth. Then, with a clean, wet face of the cloth, wipe gently in one direction, lifting at the end.
  4. Repeat if needed with a fresh face rather than pressing harder.
  5. Clean the area with waterless wash solution and buff dry.
  6. Inspect. If a dull outline remains, it has etched. See below.

Keep a small spray bottle of waterless wash and a clean microfibre in the car. It turns a potential etch mark into a two-minute job.

How to remove tree sap safely

Fresh sap

Fresh, still-tacky sap usually comes off during a normal waterless wash with a little extra product and dwell time. Spray, let it sit, and lift gently.

Hardened sap

  1. Wash the area first so there is no loose grit around the spot.
  2. Apply a dedicated sap or tar remover to a microfibre, not directly to the paint.
  3. Hold the cloth on the spot for 30 to 60 seconds to soften the sap.
  4. Wipe gently. The sap should smear and lift. Repeat rather than pressing hard.
  5. Wash the area again to remove the remover's residue, then dry.
  6. Re-apply protection, because removers can strip wax or sealant.

Diluted isopropyl alcohol is a common alternative for stubborn sap, but use it sparingly on a cloth, test it on an inconspicuous area, and wash and protect afterwards. Never use a razor blade, a scouring pad, nail polish remover or petrol on paint.

What not to do

Tempting shortcutWhy it damages paint
Scraping with a fingernail or cardTakes clear coat with the deposit and scratches around it
Wiping a dropping dry with a tissueDrags grit across the paint
Scrubbing harder instead of soaking longerPressure grinds particles into the clear coat
Leaving it "for the next wash"Gives it days to etch or harden
Household solventsCan soften or dull the clear coat

When the mark has already etched

If a dull, sometimes crater-like outline remains after the deposit is gone, the clear coat itself has been affected. What you can do depends on depth:

  • Light etching often improves with a fine finishing polish applied by hand with a foam applicator, or by machine.
  • Moderate etching may need a more cutting polish by machine, followed by a finishing polish. This is paint correction, best done carefully.
  • Deep etching that has gone well into the clear coat may only partly improve. Removing more clear coat to chase it is not always wise.

Our swirl marks and paint correction guide explains how polishing works and why it should be done conservatively.

Protection: buying time

Paint protection does not make a car immune to droppings and sap, but it changes how much time you have and how easily they come off. On bare paint, a dropping bonds directly with the clear coat. On a waxed, sealed or coated car, it sits on a sacrificial layer and releases with much less effort.

  • Wax offers a few weeks of protection.
  • Sealants last months.
  • Ceramic coating lasts much longer and is the most resistant to etching. It is especially worth considering for cars that must park under trees.

Parking under trees: a Kolkata reality

In many parts of the city, tree cover is unavoidable. Salt Lake's blocks, Alipore and Ballygunge's old roads, Bhawanipore and parts of South Kolkata have mature trees lining every street. They keep cabins cooler in summer, which is valuable. The trade-off is a car that collects sap, droppings, flowers, leaves and the occasional fruit every day. Leaves in the scuttle panel below the windscreen can also block drains and let water into the cabin in the monsoon.

If your car parks under trees:

  • Wash more often — two or three times a week rather than once. See how often to wash your car.
  • Remove droppings the same day.
  • Keep a protective layer on the paint.
  • Clear leaves from the scuttle and around the windscreen regularly.
  • Consider a breathable cover — but only on a clean car. See is a car cover good or bad.

Other things that fall from trees

Sap and droppings get the attention, but trees drop other things that harm a car too. Flowers and fruit — common in Kolkata's gulmohar and other flowering trees in season — stain light paint and turn sticky as they rot in the heat. Wet leaves left on the bonnet or roof leave tannin stains, faint brown outlines that are surprisingly hard to remove from white cars. Pollen forms a fine yellow film in spring that smears if wiped dry. And leaves collecting in the scuttle panel below the windscreen, around the sunroof and in door shuts trap moisture and block drains. Clear them at every wash; treat stains the same way as sap — soften, lift, never scrub.

Bikes and scooters too

Two-wheelers parked under trees get sap on seats, tanks and mirrors. The same rules apply: soften, lift, never scrape. Seat covers in particular can stain if sap is left in the sun.

Regular washing is the real protection

The single most effective way to prevent etch marks is not a product. It is frequency. A car washed every two or three days never gives a dropping or sap spot long enough to do serious harm. Car Ninza's monthly plans wash the car on fixed weekdays at your parking spot, and our crews soften and lift droppings and sap rather than wiping them. Frequently asked

Questions on this topic

How quickly can bird droppings damage car paint?
In hot sun, within hours. The droppings are acidic, and as the paint heats and cools it softens and contracts around the deposit, which can leave a dull etched outline. In shade and cool weather the risk is lower but still real over days.
What is the best way to remove bird droppings from a car?
Soak it first: lay a microfibre soaked in waterless wash solution or plain water over the dropping for a minute or two to soften it. Then lift it gently with a fresh area of the cloth in one direction, without pressing or scrubbing. Wash and dry the area afterwards.
Can I use a tissue to wipe off bird droppings?
It is better not to. Droppings often contain grit and seeds, and a dry tissue drags them across the paint. Always soften first and use a soft, wet microfibre.
How do I remove tree sap from my car?
Fresh sap often comes off with waterless wash solution and patience. Hardened sap needs a dedicated sap or tar remover, or isopropyl alcohol diluted appropriately, applied to a cloth and held on the spot to soften it before lifting. Wash and protect the area afterwards.
Will tree sap damage my paint?
Left for weeks, especially in heat, sap can harden and bond tightly to the clear coat, and aggressive removal can then scratch. Removed early, it rarely causes lasting damage.
How do I fix bird dropping etch marks?
Light etching can often be reduced or removed with a fine polish, by hand or machine. Deep etching that has gone into the clear coat may only be partly correctable. Prevention is far easier than correction.
Does ceramic coating protect against bird droppings?
It helps: droppings sit on the coating rather than the paint and release more easily, buying time. It does not make the car immune; droppings should still be removed promptly.
Should I park under a tree in summer?
Shade keeps the cabin cooler, but you trade it for sap, droppings, leaves and flowers. If you must, wash the car more often and keep a protective layer on the paint.
Can a car cover protect from droppings and sap?
A good-quality, breathable cover put on a clean car can. A cheap cover put on a dusty car scratches the paint when it moves in the wind.
